Restorative Facilitation Through Liberating Structures hosted by DC Peace Team

Community and restorative justice continues to grow and expand across the U.S. and world. With that growth comes increased opportunities for trainings, conferences, and events to deepen one’s relationship with these practices. In our commitment to continual learning, practice, and facilitating connections, we offer this calendar as a go to place to share and find community and restorative justice events.

Please note: This calendar is intended to serve as a resource, and entries do not constitute an endorsement by NACRJ. We encourage individuals to independently evaluate the suitability of each event for their specific needs and preferences.

To submit an event, please click the "+" button to the right. Please allow 2-3 days for your submission to appear on the calendar. You will be notified by email when your event is posted.

Event Details:

Liberating Structures are a set of simple methods for facilitating inclusive, participatory, group
collaboration and interaction. They encourage innovation, creativity, and deeper
engagement where everyone has a voice and ideas can be synthesized in a short period of
time.

Henri Lipmanowicz and Keith McCandless offered these structures in their book, "The Surprising Power of Liberating Structures: Simple Rules to Unleash a Culture of Innovation" (2013). Their
website (https://www.liberatingstructures.com ) provides a wealth of information and examples
of applications of these structures. To learn more, please visit their website beforehand. All who
choose to participate will read and affirm our values and guidelines before we begin our practice.   All segments of the DC Peace Team are encouraged to attend as these structures have wide application.

Objectives
1) Introduce Liberating Structures to the DC Peace Team.
2)  Experience three Liberating Structures and the inclusive, flexible and creative participation opportunities that Liberating Structures unleash.
3) Discuss how these Structures might be used in DCPT offerings and assess interest in learning more Structures.

The structures we will experience include:
1) Impromptu Networking to share why we have joined this workshop.
2) 15% Solutions to ask ourselves, “What can I DO in the state of our current national uncertainty?”
3) 1-2-4-All to reflect on “What can DCPT do now?”

We will have a brief chance to comment on the experience at the end of this season. We hope everyone completes an evaluation of their experience and their interest in learning more.

This training is provided by the DC Peace Team, which empowers ordinary civilians to increasingly serve their communities particularly as nonviolent peacekeepers, and by extension as peacemakers and peacebuilders. The DC Peace Team lives this mission by deploying unarmed civilian protection and accompaniment units, providing training in various nonviolent skills, and facilitating dialogues and restorative justice approaches.

Facilitators:

Martha Cooper comes to the DC Peace Team with an international background, a keen interest in non-violent conflict resolution and in aging. She earned an MS in Conflict Analysis and Resolution. An elder mediation class honed her interest in conflict resolution around aging. Martha served on the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging, cared for her mother and studied the complexities of aging. Her work with DC Peace Team began in 2022, when she facilitated restorative practices with an aging and family focus. She has taught listening skills, particularly in church settings, and trained middle and high school students at peace summits. At Eastern Mennonite University, the class, “Developing Powerful Solutions” captivated her imagination. She took the class online and then in person. “Liberating Structures” were a key component which she offers here.

Debra Budiani-Saberi (she/her) Debra is a medical anthropologist academic and health and human rights activist with a longstanding international commitment to survivor advocacy at the grassroots level and with agencies of the United Nations. She is also a facilitator of peace and justice processes, especially with youth (within and outside of schools) and families.  This approach blends an exploration of our inner worlds with our interpersonal relationship that is rooted in nonviolence, neuroscience and mindfulness. Debra earned graduate certificates in Conflict Transformation and Restorative Justice at Eastern Mennonite University and is an enthusiastic member of the Restorative Justice family of the DC Peace Team.
